When do I need a Safety Data Sheet or label image? 

For the most part, items that contain and meet the Walmart definition of a chemical, aerosol, pesticide or battery may require an SDS. However, some chemical or aerosols do not require an SDS for the item or any component of the item. 

Items such as food, drugs or cosmetics may be exempt from the requirement to have an SDS. In those cases, Walmart requires the upload of a label image instead. The label image must include ingredients and any warnings. If any additional information is required, you may be contacted to provide it.

The label image should show a complete list of ingredients, drug facts, nutrition facts or over-the-counter dosage and instructions. Here are examples:

What does Walmart require in an SDS?

All WFS items with hazardous materials must go through a compliance review, which can take up to 3 business days. To make sure your item is quickly approved, your SDS must: follow these requirements.

• Be in English
• Be in a PDF format
• Have a publicly accessible URL link that you can share
• Include the following 16 sections of information

1. Identification: Lists common names, recommended use and the supplier’s contact details
2. Hazards: Summarizes the health impact, flammability and reactivity 
3. Composition/information on ingredients: Lists specific ingredients that make up the substance 
4. First-aid measures: Describes immediate care in case of exposure 
5. Firefighting measures: Describes how to put out a fire and hazards associated with a fire 
6. Accidental release measures: Explains how to protect yourself and the environment in case of exposure 
7. Handling and storage: Describes how to properly handle and store the substance 
8. Exposure controls/personal protection: Describes personal protective equipment and other methods to limit worker exposure  
9. Physical and chemical properties: Identifies technical information about the substance, such as weight, odor and pH  
10. Stability and reactivity information: Lists conditions that make the substance unstable 
11. Toxicological information: Describes the impact to health 
12. Ecological information: Describes the impact to the environment 
13. Disposal considerations: Explains how to discard the substance and any packaging 
14. Transport information: Lists shipping requirements to transport the substance, including a UN identification number 
15. Regulatory information: Specifies safety, health and environmental regulations not listed elsewhere in the SDS 
16. Other information: Provides miscellaneous details, such as when the SDS was last revised

How do I find an SDS? 

Find the SDS through the manufacturer's website, Walmart’s SDS library or online search. For batteries and battery-containing products, you may find an Article Information Sheet or Product Datasheet instead of an SDS. 

Manufacturer website

Manufacturers and retailers often store SDS on their websites for items they sell or once sold. The search terms may vary by site, so try spelling out “Safety Data Sheet” if "SDS" doesn’t have results.

Walmart SDS library

Use the SDS Search Engine to find a wide assortment of SDS. You can search by product UPC or product name. We cannot guarantee that each SDS is latest, most up to date from the manufacturer.

Online search

To find the correct SDS, be as specific as possible in your online search. For example, include both the brand and model. If you don't know your model number or type of component, you can first search the item name. Once you locate the model number, add "SDS" to your search. For example, we first searched the item name of a medical device and found the battery model it uses. Next, we searched the battery model number to find the SDS.  

How do I submit an SDS or label image? 

You only need to submit an SDS or a label image, depending on your item.  Do not submit both.

If you have an SDS for your item, follow these steps to submit it:

1. Upload the SDS to a file-hosting service, such as Dropbox or Google Drive.
2. Create a shareable link.
3. In the link settings, check that it can be viewed by anyone with the link.
4. Copy the link and paste it in the Safety Data Sheet field of item setup.

Label images

For label images, follow these steps to submit:

1. Check that the label image is a JPG, PNG or BMP that’s under 1 MB. Learn more at Image guidelines and requirements.
2. Upload the image to a file-hosting service, such as Dropbox or Google Drive.
3. Create a shareable link.
4. In the link settings, check that it can be viewed by anyone with the link.
5. Copy the link and paste it in the Label Image URL field of item setup.
6. In the Label Image Contains field, select what content is in the image.

Troubleshooting

Your item may be rejected during the WFS compliance review if the documentation doesn’t match; it’s missing information; or it’s not formatted correctly. Here are common issues and how to fix them.
