Medical Devices
What is the Policy?
Walmart Canada prohibits the sale of certain medical device products (i.e. Class IV) and accessories as well as any products restricted by a government agency. Any products that are designed for professional use only are also prohibited.
For the purposes of this policy, a “medical device” is used in the same manner as that term is used by the Health Canada. Among other things, a medical device is an instrument, apparatus, implement, or machine intended for use in the diagnosis, reduction, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease, ailment, condition, or health concern in human and/or other animals.
In Canada, medical devices are grouped into 4 classes based on the expected level of risk to a person's health and safety. Class I medical devices (e.g., a thermometer) pose the lowest risk to users. Class IV medical devices (e.g., a pacemaker) pose the highest risk.
Before they can sell a device in Canada, manufacturers of Class II, III and IV devices must obtain a medical device licence. Although Class I devices do not require a license, they are monitored through the establishment licensing process.
