Dietary Supplements / Natural Health Products

 This document contains the Walmart Marketplace Canada policy regarding dietary supplements / natural health products (NHPs), as well as specific information regarding ingredients and labeling. 

What is the Policy? 

Unsafe dietary supplements / natural health products are prohibited from sale on Walmart Marketplace Canada. A dietary supplement / natural health product is considered unsafe when deemed as such by a federal or provincial agency, or in Walmart Canada’s own discretion is determined not safe for consumers. 

For the purposes of this policy, a dietary supplement / natural health product is a non-food product that is taken by mouth and can contain ingredients identified by the Natural Health Product Regulations, including vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, and enzymes, and are produced in forms such as tablets, capsules, soft gels, gelcaps, powders, and liquids. Natural Health Products may also refer to traditional medicines such as traditional Chinese medicines, as well as homeopathic medicines. Dietary supplements labeled for pets, livestock, and animals are within the scope of this policy. 

Any Dietary Supplement / Natural Health Product claiming to treat, prevent, or cure diseases, illnesses, ailments, infections, viruses, or any other medical condition beyond the scope of its Health Canada license is also prohibited.

Allowed 

  • Supplements / NHPs containing ingredients identified by the Health Canada that do not appear to be lawfully included in products marketed as dietary supplements or NHPs, including the substances specified in Schedule 2 of the Natural Health Product Regulations  
  • Products that are not licensed by the Health Canada with an active Natural Product Number (NPN) or Homeopathic Medicine Number (DIN-HM) on the label

  • Supplements / NHPs deemed unsafe – adulterated, misbranded, false, or misleading  

  • Supplements / NHPs named by the Competition Bureau Canada as making false or untrue marketing claims as applicable to the specific product  

  • Supplement / NHPs listings that claim the product treats, diagnoses, prevents or cures diseases, illness, ailments, infections, viruses, or any other medical condition beyond the scope of its Health Canada license. Prescription drugs are not allowed to be labeled as a supplement  

  • Supplements / NHPs not packaged, labeled, or intended for retail sale in Canada 

  • Products that contain ingredients from animals such as deer antler velvet, sharks, whales, dolphins, donkey, or porpoises  

  • Supplements / NHPs that contain illegal plants, plant products, or seeds subject to provincial or municipal government prohibitions  

  • Supplements / NHPs that are expired  

  • Used, unsealed, and/or opened product packaging  

  • Repackaged items  

  • Supplements / NHPs containing hemp, CBD, THC and other cannabinoids  

  • Supplements / NHPs that require refrigeration, such as liquid vitamins and probiotics

  • Supplements / NHPs that do not contain ingredients that are prohibited or restricted by Health Canada, such as vitamins, minerals, and other compliant supplement ingredients  
  • Supplements / NHPs that are otherwise acceptable, and do not contain improper product claims  

  • Books and material regarding Dietary Supplements meant to be educational or informational  

  • Supplements / NHPs that contain acceptable ingredients and the correct labeling as outlined in the labeling section of this policy

What is the Policy? 

Walmart Canada prohibits products and supplements that contain the following: ingredients prohibited or restricted by the Health Canada, pure or highly concentrated caffeine, illegal animal or illegal plants, prescription-only ingredients such as sildenafil or sibutramine, or controlled substances. 

Policy Basics 

The following are a few examples of prohibited product including weight loss supplements, sexual enhancement supplements, and male enhancement supplements. This list is not all-inclusive and does not include all supplements prohibited by Walmart Canada. 

These supplements are not allowed because they contain prohibited ingredients or do not comply with Walmart Canada policies.

  • Donkey Hide Gelatin / Ejiao  

  • Red Magic  

  • Rhino Pills  

  • Sunscreen Pills  

  • Yohimbine/yohimbe in all drug/food/supplement products; this is a prescription ingredient

  • Any other ingredients requiring minimum/maximum quantities allowed in dietary supplements/natural health products must be strictly adhered to.
  • Vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, and enzymes that do not contain a Health Canada prohibited or restricted ingredient.

Labeling and Listing Policy for Dietary Supplements / Natural Health Products 

What is the Policy? 

Walmart Canada requires Dietary Supplements and other products to meet specific labeling guidelines to ensure product accuracy and safety. Products that do not comply with the labeling and listing policy will be prohibited from sale on Walmart Marketplace Canada. 

Product Label and Listing Details must comply with the Health Canada labelling requirements of natural health products as outlined in the Natural Health Products Regulations

Policy Basics 

Prohibited 

  • Supplement listing or label alterations to the actual product’s performance, safety specifications, or indications of use  
  • Label must not state “Sample Product,” “Not for Resale” or other similar statements  

  • Claims that the product treats, diagnoses, prevents or cures diseases, illnesses, ailments, infections, viruses, or any other medical condition beyond the scope of the product’s Health Canada license.
