Avoid Keyword Stuffing

Overview

The guide provides an overview as how to avoid keyword stuffing as it can be harmful to the quality of your product.

Keyword Stuffing is the practice of manipulating your product titles and descriptions with excessive or irrelevant words. This practice is unhelpful for customers and maybe harmful to the quality of your product listing. Keyword stuffing includes:

  • Repeating the same word in a single title or description.
  • Including keywords that are not relevant to your item.
  • Title length too long (more than 250 characters).

Your product listing should educate and engage your customers, using keywords appropriately and in context. When you overload your title or description with keywords, you create a poor customer experience and may increase your item bounce rate.


Keyword stuffing has been used to force Search Engine Optimization (SEO), however, the practice can now lead to search penalties. If the product title has too many repetitive words or is too long, search engines, such as Google, may decrease your search ranking or remove it from their search result pages altogether. The following screenshots provide examples of keyword stuffing.






Avoid Keyword Stuffing

The following guidelines will help you to create clear, concise, informative titles and descriptions, which will improve Walmart customers' experiences.

  • Product names should be 50-75 characters in length, not including spaces.
  • Build your Product Titles with the most important information to least important from left to right.
    • E.G. Brand + Item Name + Model Name (if applicable) + Style (if applicable) + Key Attribute + Pack Count (if applicable) + Size (if applicable).
  • Select one or two primary keywords to repeat in different parts of your listing, including the product title, description, and key features.
